Dallas Cowboys Restructure Orlando Scandrick’s Contract for Cap Space

The Dallas Cowboys are just as busy as any other NFL team; America’s Team restructured cornerback Orlando Scandrick’s contract on Tuesday to clear up salary cap space to use in free agency. Jerry Jones foolishly signed Scandrick to a contract extension last off-season, so his 2012 base salary was $7.1 million. The restructure makes his new base salary $1.2 million and converts the other $5.9 million to a signing bonus.

The smart move for Dallas would be to simply cut Scandrick along with the other two worthless players that were let go on Tuesday, Terence Newman and David Buehler. However, Jerry Jones at least made Scandrick’s senseless contract more cap-friendly for this season, which helps tremendously following the $10 million cap penalty Dallas suffered on Monday.

Many teams are already very active as free agency officially began at 3:00 p.m. Central Time on Tuesday. The Miami Dolphins traded receiver Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears, reuniting him with quarterback Jay Cutler. The Bears also signed backup quarterback Jason Campbell.

The San Diego Chargers, Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars are all interested in Cowboys free agent receiver Laurent Robinson, who may very likely join Marshall, Campbell and Cutler in Chicago. Prize free agent guard Carl Nicks is no longer in Dallas’ plans as it appears he’s probably going to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Cowboys better start using all this money Jerry Jones is creating before the prizes are gone.
