Top Ten Fantasy Basketball Point Guards (1-5)

Last week showcased some of the best players at the point guard position in the NBA. With Nets point guard, Deron Williams dropping 57 points Sunday, the irony was not lost on in the fact that his career game was just days after the 50th Anniversary of Wilt Chamberlin’s 100-point contest. It even pushed some of the bigger point guard performances that day to the back page; like Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo finishing with a jaw-dropping 18 point-17 rebound-20 assist triple-double game or Chris Paul scoring 28 points with 10 dimes. The position is now featuring some extremely talented players, making the position about scoring just as much as it is about distributing the ball. Below is a list of my top ten fantasy basketball point guards in the NBA:

1. Derrick Rose, CHI – Rose makes scoring look easy for a point guard. He drives the lane, throws up a circus shot, and it continues to drop. He is a natural leader for Chicago and has free reign to shoot the ball as much as is humanly possible. Rose is the most explosive player in the game at taking the ball to the rack and the 2011 NBA MVP is really maturing into a true point guard.

2. Rajon Rondo, BOS – The point guard has been a triple-double machine with an amazing fourth already this season, including his second in his last three games. He is playing better and better with all the surrounding trade controversies, something that fantasy owners are hoping are just rumors. Rondo is not the natural scorer that Rose is, but he is an absolute master of the position. He can read the court as well as anyone in the history of the game and knows exactly where everyone on the floor is going to be. Rondo will consistently give owners over 10 dimes and 6 plus boards a game, and that is all you can ask for from a fantasy perspective.

3. Deron Williams, NJ – A couple days after watching D-Will torch a miserable Charlotte team, a small percent of the fantasy owners practically wore out their TIVO button watching the highlights. Williams has always been a strong scorer and this season’s22.6 points per game is nothing new to the avid NBA fan. However, the fact that the often-injured point guard has been able to remain healthy most of the year is very promising for the fantasy community. Williams has potential to average 30 points and 12 assists, but fantasy owners will happily take an even 20 points with 9 assists, as long as he can stay healthy.

4. Chris Paul, LAC – CP3 has greatly benefited from the move to the City of Angels. He obviously is on a winning team with the Clippers, something that he was not a part of with New Orleans, but more importantly is that the former Wake Forest star got his shot back. Paul struggled tremendously last year with his mid-sized jumpers, but now he is knocking down everything. His assist numbers have dropped a bit with his increased shot selection, but his 19.7 point and 8.3 assist average is hard for fantasy owners to complain about.

5. Russell Westbrook, CHA – Many people thought that the presence of All-Star Kevin Durant would ultimately hurt Westbrook’s ability to post decent scoring numbers. However, he is averaging 23.7 points a game this year, including an even more impressive 26.5 points in the last 19 games. He is not afraid to come up the floor and pull the trigger or to drive the lane in hopes of getting a call. Westbrook will always have more room to work with Kevin Durant next to him, providing one of the best insurance policies in fantasy basketball. Westbrook scores like a shooting guard, but the fact that he is only averaging 5.5 assists drops his overall value as a point guard.
