2nd Rant Sports 2012 Fantasy Football Mock Draft: Team 8 Analysis
Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

I was asked to participate in the second ever Rant Sports 2012 fantasy football mock draft, in which a handful of writers and managers here at Rant Sports took part in a live mock draft on ESPN. I had the eighth overall pick in a draft of 10, and I hope you’re as impressed with the results as I am.

I feel like I got some good value, especially in the later rounds. Here are the results:

1.    Tom Brady QB
2.    Chris Johnson RB
3.    Wes Welker WR
4.    Victor Cruz WR
5.    Ahmad Bradshaw RB
6.    Antonio Gates TE
7.    Eric Decker WR
8.    Shonn Green RB
9.    Kenny Britt WR
10.    Matt Schaub QB
11.    Baltimore Ravens D/ST
12.    Fred Davis TE
13.    Mario Manningham WR
14.    Daniel Thomas RB
15.    Tim Hightower RB
16.    Sebastian Janikowski K

The one thing I was surprised about was seeing Britt fall to me in the ninth round. I understand he has some off-the-field issues and is coming off a knee injury, but as my fourth wide receiver option and a bench player I’ll absolutely take it.

Johnson dropping from his rating of ninth down to my second round pick (13th) was also very surprising. Johnson has not being going outside the top 10 in any mock or real drafts I’ve done on Yahoo! (and I’ve done quite a few).

The guy had a down year in 2011, yes, but he still had over 1,400 total yards. He’s an elite talent that should be back to his 2,000+ yards from scrimmage form.

I feel like Decker could be the new Brandon Stokley. A guy not many teams would take but someone that Peyton Manning could make look like an All-Star. I admit I’ve loved Decker since he came out of college, and Manning apparently wanted the Indianapolis Colts to draft him.

If the two develop a solid chemistry, Decker could easily put up 1000 yards and seven touchdowns.

Gates in the 6th round is solid value if he can stay healthy. Unfortunately that is a big if, which is why I got Davis a little earlier than you would normally take a backup tight end.

I was very ecstatic to get Cruz in the fourth round as well, as I have him as a third round value.

The Rant Sports writers clearly had their own rankings in mind when going in, which makes sense because most of these sites rankings are bogus anyways. It’s not like many of the picks made in front of me were bad picks, just that most public mock drafts tend to follow the rankings more.

I had a lot of fun with this, and I have an inkling that this will not be the last mock draft I participate in this month.
