Zurich Classic of New Orleans: Billy Horschel Birdies Final Hole for 1st Career Win

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

It was a long time coming, but Billy Horschel finally broke through for his first career PGA Tour win this week at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Two weather delays and a final round score of eight under par, 64 and Horschel edged out D.A. Points by one stroke. Horschel birdied the final hole of his round to get to eight under on the day and 20 under par for the tournament.

This win has been long overdue for Horschel, who has been playing exceptionally well in 2013. This win gives him six top 10 finishes on the season and four in a row. This event gives him 23 consecutive cuts made, which is currently leading the Tour. He also moved up to third place in the FedEx Cup standings and will get a nice bump when the newest official world golf rankings are released.

I understand that people like to watch golfers that are household names, but I think the brilliant play by golfers like Horschel that has taken part so far in 2013 is awesome. Not only does it keep things fresh, but it also demonstrates the parity that exists in the sport. You can go from having done very little in your career to making the cut in 23 straight tournaments and winning millions of dollars in just a few short months.

Sure, it’s great to talk about Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, but sometimes it’s even better to talk about guys like Horschel and Russell Henley.
