Champions Tour: Rocco Mediate Arrives at Press Conference in Style

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

Golfers on the Champions Tour are afforded certain luxuries due to their status as the elders in the game of professional golf. One of those luxuries is the use of golf carts. The elder statesmen of the game are allowed during competition and just about any and everywhere else during tournament play, as Rocco Mediate pointed out on Thursday.

Apparently Mediate was worried about making a press conference in time during the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf event in Georgia this week. So, instead of hoofing it to the interview, he had his caddie, Martin Courtois drive him there. Makes sense. His caddie rolled through the cart barn past officials and event coordinators into the area where the interviews were being held and dropped Mediate right at the door. Talk about curbside service.

“Well, they say we can take the golf carts anywhere,” Mediate said. “We get to play this game and most of the time they pay you,” he went on to say. “I don’t see the problem. I really don’t. It’s still a game. If most guys (on the PGA Tour) would treat it that way, it would be a lot more fun for everyone to watch. If they would have more fun, they’d be better for it.”

Some people would draw the ire of critics for pulling a stunt like that. However, thanks to his seemingly affable demeanor, Mediate draws a pass and even gets a few chuckles as he’s considered eccentric. Nobody in professional golf really has a bad word to say about Mediate and you can’t really hold it against him for taking advantage of motorized transportation to get to this interview on him.
