Apparently, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay wasn’t just blowing smoke the other day when he said that his team was eyeing an impact trade.

The early word is that the Colts have made a trade with the Miami Dolphins for cornerback Vontae Davis. In return, the Dolphins will receive a 2013 second-round pick.

“For all who’ve been trying to find out Colts trade, I’m reporting the Colts have agreed to trade for Fins CB Vontae Davis for 2nd rd pick,” Jay Glazer announced via his personal Twitter account.

Plenty of rumors were swirling when Irsay announced on Thursday that the Colts were looking to make a deal. It was originally believed that they were searching for a veteran cornerback who was unhappy with their current contract, and Cary Williams of the Baltimore Ravens was thought to be the primary target. That, however, didn’t pan out as Davis is now headed for Indianapolis.

Now with the Colts, Davis should immediately fill in as one of their two starting cornerbacks. The fourth-year cover man has disappointed so far this summer with the Dolphins, coming into training camp out of shape and failing to shine. Still, Davis offers plenty of potential as a former first-round pick who has displayed glimpses of greatness throughout his short NFL career. He fits into the Colts’ scheme well and brings size and physicality to the secondary. Plus, he comes at a cost-efficient price for the next two seasons.

Assuming that the Colts coaching staff can get Davis back on track, this will be a huge win for Irsay and Indianapolis. They only parted with a second-round pick and received a quality starter capable of developing into one of the AFC’s best.

High risk, high reward is exactly what a team looking to rebuild quickly wants.
