Raul Ibanez memorably sent three shots over the postseason fences last fall. Those New York Yankees’ moments, which all occurred in the ninth inning or later, showcased a 40-year-old player who still loved the game.

The Seattle Mariners need to infuse as much passion into their clubhouse as they can, which is why “Rauuul” was offered as a day-after Christmas present to their fans. Adding the 17-year veteran likely won’t propel this club into playoff contention this season. But, steady progress has been made during the past few seasons after the team went 61-101 in 2010.

Eric Wedge was hired after that disastrous season ended. He coaxed a modest six extra wins out of the schedule in 2011. Last season the Mariners finished with a 75-87 record.

Many players on the 25-man roster will have to up their games in order to enable the M’s upward trend to continue this season, which is where the addition of players like Ibanez will come into play. The ripple effect of his presence (and others) should be felt across the roster.

Taking a flier on Jason Bay, acquiring Kendrys Morales from the Los Angeles Angels (trying to obtain Justin Upton from the Arizona Diamondbacks) and keeping the “King”, Felix Hernandez shows that general manager Jack Zduriencik is doing what he can to improve his team. With good health, veteran input and the development of some younger players the Mariners could break the .500 barrier this year.
