Michigan State Top 2014 Commit Tempted by Ohio State

Michigan State might be a little worried about losing their top commitment in the class of 2014, Drake Harris. The Spartan wide receiver commitment has been listening to his other scholarship offer before signing day in February.

Harris is Michigan’s No. 2 recruit for 2014 and has been rated the top receiver in the class by recruiting analyst Tom Lemming of Prep Football Report. He has Harris in his top 10 overall and the highly touted prospect is just as talented a football player as he is at basketball.

The high school junior had 91 catches for a state-record 2,016 yards and 23 touchdowns. He is rated a four-star prospect right now and could possibly be the next big thing at Michigan State– that is, if he stays true to his word.

He verbally committed to the Spartans in June, but had a recent visit from Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. Harris said that Meyer’s visit didn’t change anything, but weighing his options is best:

“I wasn’t saying I was de-committing, but that I had an offer from Ohio State and that I was happy about it. But it didn’t really change anything.”

The Grand Rapids Christian junior still plans on making two visits before signing day– Ohio State and Florida. He said he plans on making these visits because this may be the only opportunity to explore what’s out there.

Harris talked about how the Michigan State fan base should view his commitment to the school:

“That I’m committed right now, and I’m solid right now. I wouldn’t go to the point to say that I’m going to change my mind and go to a different school. Like I said, I’m committed to them.”

He is arguably one of the best athletes in the 2014 class and would no doubt make the Michigan State receiving corps better.

He would be selfish to de-commit after he made a statement after winning the Division 3 state title claiming that nothing would lure him away from his beloved Spartans. He has been an MSU fan since he was a little kid and it has always been his dream to play for the school and Mark Dantonio‘s dream is to keep the talented 6-foot-4, 185-pound receiver happy and committed.

This is definitely a cause for concern for Dantonio, but there is one selling point that no other schools have offered Harris. Michigan State is the only school in his top-five that has offered him to play both basketball and football– his two passions.

Hope for the best, MSU. Harris is a gem.
