UFC On Fox 4 Was The Best UFC Fight Card Of The Year

UFC on Fox 4 was probably the best card, top to bottom, this year.

The main card was a beast. All four fights were kept out of the hands of the judges. There were exciting finishes by exciting fighters.

Mike Swick vs. Damarques Johnson

Swick was once a title contender at welterweight. Unfortunately injuries beset the talented fighter and he was forced to miss two years. He came back in a big way. Johnson started the fight in control of it. He won the first round convincingly. The second was a different story though. Early in the second Swick knocked Johnson out when he seamlessly caught a leg kick, pushed him to the ground and pounded him unconscious. It was a thrilling finish. Swick showed me that he still has it.

Joe Lauzon vs. Jaime Varner

This was a great fight between two evenly matched fighters. It seemed as if a training camp was the great equalizer. Varner took the match on short notice and it showed in his cardio. He could not put Lauzon away. It proved to be his detriment. It was a back and forth war where both fighters put the other in bad positions.

The submission finish was one of the best I have ever seen. Lauzon took Varner to the ground and used his feet to flip Varner into a better position. Varner then reversed the position and broke into Lauzon’s guard. At that moment, Lauzon slapped a triangle on Varner and almost put him to sleep. Great television.

Lyoto Machida vs. Ryan Bader

Machida dominated this fight. It never left the ground. It was never close. Bader was embarrassed and outclassed. He finished Bader with a counter-strike knockout in the second round. He simultaneously blocked a Bader overhand right and hit him with a punch that ended the fight immediately. It was reminiscent of Machida’s take down of Thiago Silva.

Mauricio Rua vs. Brandon Vera

Vera gave his best effort. He kept Shogun occupied for four rounds. Vera pushed Rua to the brink and put him in trouble several times in the second and third round. It was a four round spectacle. Vera fought the fight of his life.
