Alistair Overeem Calls Out Junior Dos Santos

Alistair Overeem must have some residual roid rage left over.

The former Pride fighter told FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight, that Junior Dos Santos is ducking him.

“I think he’s afraid to fight me. He was happy that the last fight on May 26 didn’t happen against us. I approached him at the UFC Fighter Summit in Vegas and said, ‘Let’s do it. Let’s prove something to the world and lets fight.’ Then he suddenly acted like he didn’t understand English and how he wants to fight Cain first. The fact of the matter is, I’m the number-one heavyweight in the world and if he wants to be the number-one heavyweight, he has to come through me.”

“First he wants to fight Cain [Velasquez] and now me. Talk all you want. Come into the Octagon. I will immediately say yes. Give me and the fans what they want. But he’s expecting that fight not to happen. I would welcome that fight and want it to happen. I would say yes every time to that fight.”

Dos Santos and Overeem were scheduled to fight at UFC 146 before Overeem failed a random drug test. It spurred debate about elevated testosterone and steroids in the sport.

Rumors have swirled around Overeem and steroid use since he joined Strikeforce as a heavyweight. During his tenure in Pride, Overeem fought mainly at light heavyweight. His weight gain startled many.

So instead, Frank Mir fought in his place. And Mir was beaten soundly.

Obviously, Overeem lost his license to fight with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He is applying again in Dec.

Overeem believes he will meet all of the requirements and regain his license.

“My manager and I have a good relationship with the (Nevada State Athletic) Commission and we’re taking all steps necessary and following all the rules, and I don’t expect any problems to get my license from the commission when the time comes.”

I still don’t understand why Overeem keeps calling out Cigano. Why poke the bear?

Perhaps he’s trying to drum interest in a possible fight. Maybe he’s playing a Nick Diaz card. He’s trying to disrespect the champion enough to change his focus from Cain Velasquez.

Either way, I’ll watch when the two meet up.
