Stephen Curry On The Verge Of Setting NBA Record for Three Point Makes

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

In what has already been a fantastic bounce back year for Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, him being on the brink of setting the new NBA standard for threes made in a season would make it that much sweeter.

Curry’s struggles with injuries over the last couple seasons has been well documented, as his recurring ankle sprains derailed his career a bit and caused him to miss 40 games over the 2011-2012 campaign. The injuries were beginning to look as if Curry wouldn’t be the same player, but he’s came back better than ever.

After having surgery to repair the ankles, Curry has resembled the player that put up huge numbers in three years at Davidson and inspiring the Warriors to select him seventh overall in 2009. This year Curry is averaging career-high in both scoring and assists — 23 points and 6.9 assists per game — while also leading the league in three point field goals made with 268, just one away from tying Ray Allen‘s record of 269 set in 2005-2006. With the Warriors having one more game, it’s a near certainty that Curry will set the new standard Wednesday night against the Portland Trail Blazers.

But Curry isn’t just your typical volume gunner; he’s extremely accurate from long range. Curry is connecting at a .455 percentage from three, good for second in the NBA. So not only does Curry take a ton of threes, he’s making almost half of his 589 attempts. That in itself is amazing.

Curry should have been an All-Star this year, but their will be plenty more seasons for him to receive that honor. Curry’s play has the Warriors in the playoffs for the first time of his career and might even earn Curry a few third place MVP votes, which should be consolation enough.
