Why Is Memphis Tigers Transfer Tarik Black A Hot Commodity?

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

Tarik Black played three seasons with the Memphis Tigers, but he will be transferring from the school. Although Memphis is a good school in its own right on a yearly basis, it does not compare to schools such as Duke or Ohio State. Well, apparently Black is drawing a lot of attention from many college basketball teams, so what is all of the buzz about and why has he become a hot commodity?

During the 2012-13 college basketball season, Black averaged 8.1 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game in 20.8 minutes per game. All three of those numbers were down from his sophomore season, so it is no wonder why Black wants to transfer.

The main reason why schools want him–even though he only has one year left to play–is for the simple fact that he produces. Black shot 58.9 percent from the field last season and 68.9 percent from the field his sophomore season when he was getting a lot of playing time. If Black played around 30 minutes per game, he would be much more noticeable from a points and rebounds standpoint.

However, Black also has experience and he is a big body that any team would be blessed to have. Black is 6’9” and weighs 262 pounds. With more playing time and with that big frame, Black could be–dare I say–one of the best players in the country next season.

He is not going to make much from the charity stripe because he is a terrible free throw shooter and he will not drain a three, since he has not attempted a shot from behind the arc in his college career, but Black is a very talented player. He most likely won’t be one of the best players in the nation next year, but what I am trying to get at is the fact that he is a great player and he should have been used more at Memphis.

Well, he will surely be used more at whatever team he goes to and he will produce, like he did all three seasons for the Tigers.
