Wow, what a game by those Cornhuskers. Nebraska played absolutely horrible for the first 2.5 quarters. And then, well, things got better. A lot better.

Let’s recap the early part of the game.

Ohio State was moving the ball all over Nebraska. Braxton Miller was having his way against the defense. The Huskers were completely off balanced, and the Buckeyes were having an absolute field day. Nebraska could not stop the run, or the pass, and it was absolutely horrendous.

Then, Lavonte David changed the game with one play.

Braxton Miller was running right on the play, and he got turned around. Then Lavonte David ran into Miller and stripped the ball. Two plays later, Taylor Martinez ran the zone read, kept the ball, and scooted into the end zone. The comeback was on.

Things really started going downhill for the Buckeyes after that, as Braxton Miller would get injured. Joe Bauserman would replace Miller, but he would have absolutely no chance against a fired up Husker defense. Bauserman would go 1 of 10, with an interception by new Husker corner Stanley Jean-Baptiste. Jean-Baptiste was moved to corner just two weeks ago, and last night was his first game. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s 6-3 and 220 lbs.

The Husker offense decided to get going in the rain. Taylor Martinez was throwing the ball pretty well, and the offensive line decided to get the ground game going. They were opening up quite a few holes, and Rex Burkhead was thrashing the Buckeyes defense.

Rex Burkhead may have also have one of the best plays of the night, in combination with Taylor Martinez. Martinez was trapped in the pocket, scrambled around, and then found Burkhead out in the flat. When he got the ball, Rex made a fantastic juke left, and then was off to the races. Next drive down the field, he found the end zone on a toss left, and then the game was over.

Nebraska had narrowly escaped the Buckeyes, but a victory is a victory, and we will take them any way we can.

  1. Stephen Johnson says:

So what was the difference in the defense? Why is the defense so much less effective than last year or the year before. Was it just the change in QBs or was it the Husker players being fired up? When we play against Penn State will we be able to shut down their offense or will it go back to not being able to stop the pass or the run? The defense has had problems with literally every team they have played this year. Even in the first game the other team moved the ball well. They just did not score. These are the questions that need to be answered. The line is basically the same as last years line but completely different results. Why? I understand many in the defensive backfield are young and inexperienced but they are having a really tough time, Why. Two and three years ago they backfield was inexperienced, sometimes running around not knowing where they were supposed to be or do and yet they got the job done. What has changed. Is it the new coaches? Are the players not at the same quality as those in the past, who mostly went to the pros? These are a lot of questions without answers. Until we have those answers the defense will struggle. Stafford is a great hitter against the run in the mold of David. Perhaps he should be linebacker? I do not know the answers but some one needs to start asking the right questions. It is not a mystery that cannot be solved.

One thing this year is that, getting here into the B1G schedule, we have to prepare for a bunch of new teams. It’s not like a Missouri or Oklahoma who we have played countless times before. The backfield a few years ago did give up some big plays (at Va Tech comes straight to my mind) but they also had a man named Suh up front who could help make them look good.
In Fisher and Compton, those two both suffered injuries last year, and did not play a whole lot. It’s hard coming back when you haven’t played in basically 2 years. It’s one thing to sit and watch film and know where you should be, and another thing to actually do it in a game at game speed.
New coaches probably has something to do with it, as everyone has to adjust to a new coach with a different style. Everyone is learning all the time.

I completely agree though, that this year has been a disappointment. But my question is, did they have too much hype to start with?
