2013 NFL Draft: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Smart to Pick QB Mike Glennon

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

You certainly can’t win everybody over, and the Tampa Buccaneers proved that in this year’s NFL Draft. With their third round selection, which was really their second selection, they drafted quarterback Mike Glennon. Right away, this invoked a negative response from some Bucs’ fans, as many thought Josh Freeman‘s was already the team’s quarterback of the future.

However, I really like the acquisition of Glennon. Sure, nobody likes a quarterback controversy, but we’re pretty far from anything of that nature. It’s Freeman’s show in 2013, it could be his last in Tampa, but it’s still his show. Glennon is merely a smart draft pick, that will come in handy if Freeman fails.

The drafting of Glennon is just a good football move, that will only increase the level of competition at quarterback. Freeman is going to have to be on his A-game from the start of training camp, and the Bucs are hoping that the extra pressure, will lead to better days.

Freeman is going into a ‘prove it’ type of year, and if you don’t have a plan-B as a franchise, you’re just dumb. The Buccaneers have a very solid plan-B in Glennon, a QB who no doubt is capable of playing on Sundays.

While I understand the knee-jerk reaction some Bucs’ fans had to this pick, I feel they need to look at the big picture. At the same time, if Freeman comes out and performs, people will forget all about Mike Glennon.
