Play-Caller Still in Question for the Dallas Cowboys, or is It?

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

With the 2013 NFL Draft finally over and all the talk about how the Dallas Cowboys plan to incorporate their new talent, one thing that no one is talking about is who will be calling the plays next season.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I think head coach Jason Garrett is a good coach; however, the perception is that he isn’t a good play-caller. It’s not up to me to decide that either. What I will say is that under Garrett, the Cowboys’ offense has had moments where it looks unstoppable and then had moments where they look as if they couldn’t move the ball against a team of children.

Is it lack of execution or is it that Garrett’s offense might be too complex for the plays they’re trying to run? I honestly think it could be a mixture of the two. That being said, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it clear after quarterback Tony Romo re-signed with the team that he wants the coaching staff to take advantage of all the things Romo does best.

“He’s not going to be paid to be a bus driver,” Jones said. “This thing has got to be oriented toward his skills.”

So, the Cowboys included Romo in their Draft plans, which ultimately led to the selections of center Travis Frederick, tight end Gavin Escobar and wide receiver Terrance Williams with the team’s first three picks in the Draft.

After the Draft, Jones said that Romo would be spending more time at the facility working on his game and that the team is going to tailor the game plans to Romo’s skillset as much as possible.

“A part of what we agreed with was extra time on the job, beyond the norm,” Jones said. “That doesn’t mean that he didn’t have a lot of time on the job, but extra time on the job, Peyton Manning-type time on the job.”

So, Romo will now work alongside Garrett and offensive coordinator Bill Callahan to devise the game plan. Personally, I think this is the best news to come out of Valley Ranch in a long time.

There was even something about Romo wanting to be an offensive coordinator when he’s done playing football. So, is there any surprise as to who will be calling the plays next season?

I don’t think so. I think that person’s name is Tony Romo.
