St. Louis Rams Should Strongly Consider Trading Tavon Austin

Honestly, to this point in his career, what has Tavon Austin done for the St. Louis Rams? As the eighth overall pick in 2013, many, including myself, thought Austin would come in and explode on to the scene. The Rams, I’m sure, thought Austin would be the playmaker they wanted and desperately needed. They even moved up in the draft to get him, but up until this point, he has been something of a disappointment.

Austin did it all while down in West Virginia, but this isn’t college football anymore and Austin’s development as a pro has been a concern. While his hands seem to have gotten better since his rookie year, he isn’t the playmaker that we all hoped he would be by now.

At times, it feels like Jeff Fisher and company are just throwing Austin out there and hoping he does something special. Before he sprained his MCL, the Rams were giving him carries — hopefully those can continue to go to Tre Mason. I have my own complaints about the Rams coaching staff, but it seems like they might stick around for a little longer, and that’s why Austin needs a first-class ticket out of St. Louis.

It is doubtful the Rams would trade Austin so soon, but with a receiving core of Brian Quick, Kenny Britt, Jared Cook and Stedman Bailey, the Rams could get away with not having Austin on the roster.

There is still some heat on Austin. He has been able to give us flashes of his potential, so there could be a potential buyer out there. While teams were uneasy about trading for Percy Harvin, they might be interested in the younger, less hostile model.

Like I said, it is doubtful the Rams trade Austin before the trade deadline this year, but it is the NFL and anything can happen.
