New York Jets Should Not Sign Doug Marrone Until GM In Place

The New York Jets are in a very interesting situation when it comes to their vacant head coach and general manager positions. With head coach Doug Marrone opting out of his contract with the Buffalo Bills, many are predicting that he would be a great fit on the Jets. With his ability to get the most out of his players, many believe it would be an easy transition to bring Marrone in to coach the Jets and go from there.

While this is more of impulse decision, the Jets shouldn’t just throw the keys to the franchise just because Marrone is now a hot head coaching free agent. Sure, he made quite the turnaround with the Bills that saw them get a 9-7 record last season, which was one of their first winning records in about a decade, but he won’t bring immediate success. Signing Marrone on impulse would deter some quality general manager candidates from even applying.

When a new general manager gets to a team, they almost always want to be able to bring in their preferred candidate for head coach. While it’s fine to schedule an interview with Marrone, the Jets shouldn’t sign him before landing their top general manager candidate. Just because he’s from the Bronx doesn’t mean anything in the grand scheme of what the Jets ultimately need for future success.

Overall, while Marrone would bring some nice tangibles to the Jets if he were to become their next head coach, it just wouldn’t make football sense to grab him before having a general manager set in place for this upcoming season. The Jets need a lot of work and major overhaul if they are to become contenders in 2015, and quite frankly, throwing everything in the hands of Marrone wouldn’t be moving in the right direction.
