2012 Fantasy Football: Fantasy Owners May Reconsider Having Isaac Redman in Lineup
Chris Humphreys-US PRESSWIRE

Prior to the start of NFL training camps, Pittsburgh Steelers running back Isaac Redman was considered one of the sleepers in 2012 fantasy football leagues. Now Redman may be considered a liability.

The Steelers running back went down in pain during practice on Wednesday due to a groin injury and soreness in his hip. Redman is scheduled to have an MRI for a prognosis of his injuries.

If Redman’s injuries are considered too severe, he may possibly start the 2012 season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, meaning that he will miss the first six weeks of the regular season.

For fantasy owners who have already drafted their teams and have Redman, I recommend that you should keep him for later on in the season if in fact he does start the season on the PUP list. There is still now guarantee that Rashard Mendenhall will be completely healthy from his torn ACL, and Pittsburgh’s thin running back corps will definitely need Redman in such a situation.

If you haven’t drafted your team yet, and Redman does start the season on the PUP list, stay away.

Another thing to take in to consideration is picking up another one of Pittsburgh’s running backs. Jonathan Dwyer and Baron Batch may split the bulk of the carries. However, the one back that the Steelers have which stands out the most to me is rookie Chris Rainey.

Rainey is a back that will get touches from rushing and receiving, and is a big-play threat anytime he touches the ball. Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley may lean more on the passing game if Redman is sidelined for the beginning of the season, and this will greatly benefit Rainey’s style of play.

Now for all of you who have Redman on your team, keep in mind that if Redman is healthy and ready to go in Week 1, keep him in your starting lineup. But if he in fact does start the season on the PUP list, place him on the bench and use him for the latter part of the season, or use him as trade-bate.
