Milwaukee Brewers’ Carlos Gomez Deserved NL Player of the Week Honor

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez was named the National League Player of the Week from April 15-21.

Gomez batted .500 (9-for-18) with two home runs, three RBI, one triple, one stolen base and five runs in six games. More importantly, Gomez helped Milwaukee sweep the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs over that span. The Brewers are currently on a seven-game win streak and are considered the hottest team in Major League Baseball.

The 27-year-old has come up big in almost every game, including recording three hits in each of the first three games of the seven-game win streak. In fact, he has posted at least one hit in six of the past seven games. His lone hitless game occurred Saturday when he went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in the 5-1 win over Chicago.

Gomez’s biggest contribution last week occurred in the first game of the series against the Cubs. His solo home run in the seventh inning ended up being the difference that gave the Brewers the 5-4 victory.

The seventh year veteran certainly did not start the season on a hot streak. After signing a three-year, $24 million contract extension in the offseason, Gomez clearly felt the pressure to deliver right out of the gate. With all of the added pressure he put on himself, all he had was a .162 batting average to show for it. Obviously, things have changed for the better rather quickly for him.

The NL Player of the Week honor is Gomez’s second since joining the Brewers. The other time he was given the award came last season during the week of July 23-29.
