Melky Cabrera Returning to Form With Toronto Blue Jays

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

The 2012 season was one that saw Melky Cabrera get caught for his drug use which saw him miss out on the final games of the championship run for the San Francisco Giants. Cabrera moved to the Toronto Blue Jays in the offseason and is leading the team with a .280 batting average so far after the weekend’s games. It has been a number of months for Cabrera but he is hitting right near his career averages now.

The Blue Jays as a whole have struggled this season and Cabrera was doing the same thing until a recent hot streak. Cabrera is 6-for-13 over his last three games which have raised his average to the point it is now going into Monday’s action. Toronto expected many other players to play better than they have so far this season so it must be good that Cabrera is at least doing something positive. I wouldn’t have expected him to do what he is doing now even if it is just a .280 average after everything that has went on.

This hot streak in recent games will hopefully turn things around for Cabrera and he can make a run at hitting .300 by the end of the season. Is that likely? Probably not but at least Cabrera is back on the field where he belongs and hopefully drug-free. I would hope he has learned his lesson about this because doing it may work for a short period but you will get caught at some point in time. Toronto is going to need more of Cabrera the rest of this season if plans for a division title are going to work out.
