The Minnesota Twins are not on anyone’s list of contenders this year but that isn’t stopping them from fighting, scratching and clawing for everything they can get. Their hard effort of late has them over the Chicago White Sox and out of last place in the American League Central. Not only that but consider the AL Central is a two-horse race between the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals. Add to those two the scrappy and hot hitting Cleveland Indians who are knocking hard on the Royals and Tigers door. Guess who is just about in a level tie with the Indians for third place. That’s right the Twins are.

Oh it’s true, believe it or not the Twins are actually surging forward with the core they have left. Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer are leading them of course. They are one – two on the team in batting average then Morneau is up there for team RBI while Mauer seems to be more the run scorer. Having said that about those two, they are getting some help as well and that will be the key to them continuing to improve.

There is something special about the small market team competing with the teams with larger payrolls. Whether or not the Twins are your favorite team it would be very difficult of you not to be impressed by their continued success and improvement. All they are going to need is to keep doing the simple things right and avoid making those little mistakes that are so costly. Of course the big mistakes are costly too.
