What a story this has turned out to be. First it was Chael Sonnen against Jon Jones, then it Was Lyoto Machida versus Jones. Now it has been announced on mmafighting.com that Jon Jones will be fighting Vitor Belfort at UFC 152.
This is definitely one of the craziest days in in MMA history.This is the first time that the UFC has ever had to cancel a major pay-per-view event. Now to go along with it, we have had to endure the rumors of three different opponents for Jon Jones.This will not be a day that UFC president Dana White will remember proudly.
Not to mention, what is with all these fighters declining fights? Jon Jones declines a title defense against Sonnen?Is that even allowed? And then Machida turns down an opportunity to fight Jones again. It has gotten pretty ridiculous in the last few months with fighters pulling out of fights and declining them.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the UFC implement a new rule to prevent certain top contenders and champions from refusing fights. It is not fair to the fans and it is definitely not fair to the fighters who were scheduled to fight on the UFC 151 card. This raises a question. Should a champion be stripped of his belt if he declines a fight? You are the champion and should have to fight whoever is put in front of you.After all, you are suppose to be “the best in the world”.
