Could the Chicago Bears Trade Up to Take Tavon Austin?

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears are picking 20th this year, and I’d be lying if I told you I have an idea of what they’re doing. I don’t think anyone can tell you what they’re doing. They need a wide receiver and tight end on the playmaking side, a tackle on the protection side, a cornerback, free safety, and linebacker on the defense side of the ball. I’ve had my suspicions that they’d trade down to get more picks later in the draft, but after thinking about it more, I think they could trade up and take the WR everyone is talking about: Tavon Austin.

Austin would be a huge move for the new offensive minded coach Marc Trestman. He’s going to want to put as many weapons around Jay Cutler as possible, and he would be a perfect fit to play across from Brandon Marshall due to his “going deep” ability. The Bears added Martellus Bennett this offseason as well so they could start the process of putting together an offense Bears fans have never seen before.

Who could they trade with? Well, there’s a few teams I look at. The Philadelphia Eagles at number 4 and the Buffalo Bills at number 8. Both could go a million ways, but both are rumored to want a QB in this draft. QB is not a deep position here with no one really standing out to be a star so I could see both trading down to 20 with the Bears and taking a guy like Matt Barkley.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Bears do, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade up, trade down, or stand put at 20. Your move Phil Emery. We’re all waiting to see what kind of magic you have for us this year.
