2013 NFL Draft: Did the New York Giants Make the Right Decision With Ryan Nassib?

(Rich Barnes/USA Today Sports)

The 2013 NFL Draft wasn’t filled with as many steller quarterbacks like previous seasons, but there are still plenty of interesting players to keep an eye on for the 2013 season. One player that comes to mind is former Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib–who fell to the New York Giants in the fourth round at No. 110.

Nassib’s draft story was interesting as he seemed to jump up on draft boards over the last week or so–especially when it came to the Buffalo Bills at No. 8 in the first round. New Bills head coach Doug Marrone coached Nassib during his time at Syracuse and there was some speculation about the team possibly selecting him in the first round–which would have been one of the biggest shocks of the draft.

Instead, the Bills traded down their first-round pick to No. 16 to select E.J. Manuel instead and give the Giants the opportunity to draft Nassib where he belonged in the fourth round.

Obviously, Nassib won’t be starting as a rookie in 2013 unless something were to happen to Eli Manning and will most likely be competing for the backup quarterback position instead. There’s no telling what to expect from Nassib down the road, but from the perspective of New York–this is one of those low risk opportunities they hope to see have a high reward down the road considering all of the potential surrounding the quarterback.

Who knows–maybe a few years developing behind Manning will help him become the team’s starting quarterback of the future when Eli decides to call it a career.
