2012 Fantasy Football: Better Late-Round Pick at QB – Matt Ryan or Jay Cutler?
USPRESSWIRE Kim Klement

The 2012 fantasy football season is approaching us very quickly with the first regular season game slated for September 5th when the Dallas Cowboys will face the New York Giants.

There are still several fantasy drafts that will happen from now until the season starts and maybe even after the season starts. Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan and Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will be great late-round picks at the QB position if you do not land one of the top 5 QBs.

I like both of these QBs this year, but I recommend Ryan over Cutler for a couple of obvious reasons:

1. Offensive Line

The Falcons have been a better pass protection team. Ryan has only been sacked 68 times during the last 46 games and has been able to play in 46 of the last 48 games. Cutler on the other hand, has been sacked 110 times over the last 46 games and has only been able to play in 41 of the last 48 games.

2. Running Game

The Falcons have a great running game, but they plan to run less because of the aging of veteran RB Michael Turner. The Bears have two great young backs that they plan to get 1,000 yards each. If the Bears want to achieve these goals they will have to run early and often. The Falcons plan to air it out a little more this year which should boost Ryan’s stats.

3. Experience as a Group

The Falcons’ core in the passing game should be ready to take things to the next level this year. Ryan has been with WR Roddy White, TE Tony Gonzalez, WR Julio Jones, and passing down RB Jacquizz Rodgers for  a year now, so this group should really gel in their second season as a unit. The Bears will be much improved on offense with the additions of WR Brandon Marshall, WR Alshon Jeffrey, and RB Michael Bush, but it will take a year or so before they can reach the level in the passing game that I feel the Falcons will be at this season.

I do feel that Cutler will be much improved from recent season, but I think the offensive line woes and the running game will keep him from being an elite QB. I would still grab him if Ryan is gone sometime after the 5th round.

I am predicting that Ryan will post elite numbers this year that will put him in the top 6 QBs. I could see him putting up 4,500 yards and 30+ touchdowns.
