Fantasy Baseball Closer Report: First Round Playoffs
David Banks-US PRESSWIRE

With the first week of the fantasy baseball playoffs upon us, it’s pretty clear if you are set at the closer position, or if you have a gaping hole at the bottom of your lineup.  The position is growing more and more important in fantasy baseball and is always worth taking a closer look at.  Each week of the season I will dissect the closer position by evaluating injuries, looking at position battles, and reviewing some future stars.  Below is the playoffs first-round edition of my fantasy baseball closer report:

Bigger Than Life:

Sergio Romo, San Francisco Giants – Romo has been quietly consistent over on the west coast this year.  He has only walked 10 batters in over 42 innings and has shinned since being given the ball in the ninth inning.  Romo is a great closer to plug in down the stretch, and he has been one of the best free agent closers this year.

Chicago Closer?

Addison Reed, Chicago White Sox – Reed has allowed at least one earned run in 4 of his last eight games, which can be devastating from a fantasy perspective.  However, despite Reed’s ups and downs, the team remains confident in him.   He keeps getting the ball in the ninth inning, and until he does not; he will be a mid-level closer.

Feed the Needy:

Jake McGee, Tampa Bay Rays – For the very desperate fantasy owners out there, Tampa middle reliever, McGee, has pitched flawlessly over the last month.  He has not allowed a run in 15 consecutive appearances, while limiting the damage to only four total hits.  McGee has really settled down, and has shown that he can put together some spotless innings for an owner that needs a “closer” for a playoff run.
