2013 Fantasy Baseball: SP Matt Cain Finally Calming Down

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Fantasy Baseball owners all over the country can take a sigh of relief, because San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain is finally pitching to his potential.

Cain was drafted to be a number one fantasy pitcher this spring, but he has only pitched like it twice this season. The 28-year-old has an ugly 5.57 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP and has been erratic this year to say the least. He is currently 1-2 and has seen his ERA climb all the way up to 8.38 earlier in the year.

The right-hander has had two consecutive seasons with an ERA under 2.89 and a WHIP under 1.09, so his horrendous start of the 2013 season has had more than a couple owners panicking. Many owners have even begun shopping the three-time All-Star pitcher.

However, his last start was on Sunday night against the Los Angels Dodgers and it was by far his best outing of the year. Cain lasted a season-high 7.1 innings and only allowed one run on five hits and three walks. It was his best start since his opening day gem against the very same Dodgers team.

In the game, Cain was hitting his spots and his fastball was topping out at well over 93 MPH. The righty is finally getting his confidence back and it is obvious with every pitch. He seems ready to start producing, so fantasy owners can expect to see his numbers come back down to earth.

Cain is scheduled to make his next start against the Atlanta Braves on Friday. In his last two stats against the Braves, Cain has a 1-1 record and a 2.08 ERA. Look for him to have another strong start this weekend for fantasy baseball owners and to slowly start turning his rocky season around.
