Players That Have Been Key For Pittsburgh Pirates So Far

Every team has certain players that are keys to their success, and the Pittsburgh Pirates are no different. Some players that contribute early on can be unsung types of players, while others that contribute are the ones everyone expects to contribute.

The Pirates sit at 4-6, leaving them third in the National League Central standings behind the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds. Very early on in the season, the offense was nowhere to be found. However, recently the team has started to hit the ball better. If the pitching can stay as good as it has been so far and sustain that success all the way through October, the Pirates will be able to contend in the NL Central for sure.

Obviously, the core guys like Neil Walker, Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez, and Starling Marte will need to stay healthy in order for this to happen as well. However, this isn’t with just the Pirates; every team needs to stay healthy to contend. With the Reds in 2012, their pitching staff was healthy for almost the entire year, the starting rotation almost never changed.

The National League Central is one of the more top-heavy divisions in MLB in 2013, with the Reds and Cardinals being the obvious favorites to be first and second in the division. The Milwaukee Brewers and Pirates seem to be the next group, with the Chicago Cubs being the pick by almost everyone to finish last.

Hopefully, the Pirates will be able to provide a good season for the fans in Pittsburgh. 20 years is long enough.

Starling Marte

Starling Marte has been a great spark at the top of the Pittsburgh Pirates' lineup, he reached base safely in the first inning in six straight games for the Pirates. Marte is never going to be your prototypical "lead-off hitter", meaning he won't draw a ton of walks, but he will provide some power and speed at the top of the Pirates lineup for what Pirates' fans hope will be the next ten years.

Jason Grilli

Jason Grilli already appears to be comfortable closing games, as he is perfect with four saves out of four save opportunities. If he is going to pitch as well as he currently is for the entire 2013 season, it will make Pirates' fans forget about Joel Hanrahan pretty quickly.

Mark Melancon

Mark Melancon was a part of the Joel Hanrahan trade that brought him, Jerry Sands, Stolmy Pimental and Ivan De Jesus, Jr. to the Pirates. He hasn't disappointed so far, not even allowing a run yet. Melancon's fastball looks really good, with lots of life and it hits the mid-90's. He is proving to be a very nice set up man.

Andrew McCutchen

This one is obvious. Andrew McCutchen is one of the best players in baseball. He is a five-tool player and is the Pirates' most important player, that goes without saying. The Pirates need McCutchen to be a MVP candidate for them to stay in contention.

Justin Wilson

Justin Wilson has been a very pleasant surprise for the Pirates. He came on in relief and pitched three innings for the Pirates in the game that Wandy Rodriguez injured his hamstring. Wilson has a mid-to-high 90's fastball and a very solid curveball that sits in the mid-70's.
