Ryan Murray Undergoes Shoulder Surgery, Out Six Months

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Ryan Murray’s new year has started off under the knife. Two months after suffering an injury during a WHL game, he finally underwent surgery at the Cleveland Clinic on Thursday.

The defenseman and Columbus Blue Jackets prospect was diagnosed with a torn labrum in his left shoulder back in November after colliding with an opposing forward and falling backwards during a game between the Everett Silvertips and Victoria Royals. His surgery was delayed until this month to give the swelling around his shoulder a chance to subside. This isn’t the first time that a hockey player has had this surgery in Cleveland: Taylor Hall had shoulder surgery at the Cleveland Clinic last spring.

Murray knows what he’ll miss because of his surgery: he’s already had to watch his fellow Canadians play in the World Junior Championship and must also watch the Silvertips from wherever he’ll rehab his shoulder. Before his injury, he’d captained them with two goals and 17 points and had also captained the WHL team in the CHL Subway Series against Team Russia.

According to the team’s website, the surgery was successful, and general manager Scott Howson stated that Murray will now go through six months of rehab for his shoulder. That will take him up to the Blue Jackets’ development camp, which he’ll most likely miss. But fear not: he’ll be healed in plenty of time for the 2013-14 season’s training camp this fall. For now, he’ll have to watch his future teammates fight for the playoffs in their shortened season.
