Gervinho SOCCER: World Cup-Ivory Coast vs Portugal

According to reports, Arsenal‘s Gervinho could be leaving the Gunners as soon as Marseille have confirmed their interest in signing the former Ligue 1 star.

The 26-year-old Ivory Coast international cost Arsenal £11 million (though manager, Arsene Wenger said in a press conference that he was only bought for £8 million)  from French side, Lille in 2011 and has struggled to consolidate his place in the Arsenal starting eleven.

Having shown moments of brilliance at times, Gervinho has also been widely inconsistent and erratic, frustrating Gunners fans in the process. After being a starter for the majority of his debut season, Gervinho has now fallen down the pecking order, while his return of 11 goals and 13 assists in 63 games for Arsenal hasn’t been up to the mark.

Marseille, in the mean time, have confirmed their interest in the Ivorian as their assistant coach, Franck Passi told 10 Sport, “This [Gervinho] is a profile that interests us, yes. We want flank players, with dribbling, passing and scoring and Gervinho has this profile.”

Passi also went to reveal that Marseille have identified Gervinho as the sort of skilful wide player who would suit them, along with Sporting Lisbon star, Diego Capel.

Gervinho had also been linked with a move back to former club Lille, two years after leaving them for the Emirates Stadium, as well as Turkish side, Fenerbahce. Two weeks ago, however, Gervinho said he was staying put at Arsenal, according to The Sun. “I have a contract until 2015 with Arsenal and I intend to honour it. There is always speculation but I am looking forward to a good holiday and to come back to Arsenal. I want to win my place in the starting line-up week in, week out.”
