James Driscoll Pledges $1,000 Per Birdie to Victims of Boston Marathon Bombing

Allan Henry-USA TODAY Sports

In the wake of the horrific occurrences at the Boston Marathon earlier this week there has been an outpouring of support for those affected from all over our country and the entire world. Everyday citizens have pledged their prayers and monetary donations. Sports teams in New York that have been bitter rivals with their opponents in Boston have openly voiced their support for the city and its citizens. Heck, the New York Yankees even played the Boston Red Sox staple “Sweet Caroline”. It’s been incredible to see the outpouring of support for a city that has been so deeply impacted by such a cowardly act.

PGA Tour veteran and Massachusetts native James Driscoll has followed the lead of New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola who pledged to donate $100 per catch and $200 per drop to charities for the victims of the bombing. Since Driscoll doesn’t catch (or drop) passes for a living, he is instead pledging $1,000 for each birdie he makes in the next two tournaments in his “Birdies for Boston” effort. The events are this week’s RBC Heritage and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans next week.

Driscoll didn’t make it to Sunday this week because of the amount of golfers that made the cut, but still recorded nine birdies. I’m sure he wishes he could’ve stuck around for all four rounds, but in the end he is still giving $9,000 to charity this week. That might not be a huge amount in the grand scheme of things but every little bit helps. And I’m sure he is at the forefront of athletes that are going to donate a portion of their earnings to this worthwhile cause.

Monetary donations can’t bring back the lives that were lost and make whole those that were injured, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. Kudos to Driscoll and everyone else that is doing what they can to help get the victims of this tragedy back on the road to recovery.

I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I hope Driscoll wins next week’s event and records 1,000 birdies.
