RBC Heritage: Webb Simpson Goes Low, Plays Himself Into Contention

Bruce Chapman-USA TODAY Sports

The difficult conditions at Harbour Town Golf Links for this week’s RBC Heritage have been widely discussed. Wind and rain have made scoring conditions incredibly difficult for the PGA Tour pros. Apparently Webb Simpson failed to receive that memo on Saturday, however. Simpson went low and carded a third round 65 at Hilton Head to move himself into contention.

Thanks to his six under par score in the third round, Simpson sits at nine under par for the tournament and enters the final round just two shots behind leader Charley Hoffman. Simpson is looking for his first victory since the U.S. Open last year. “It’s all in my swing,” Simpson said. “We’ve been working on the same thing all year. We knew where we wanted to get, we just didn’t know how to work on it. Once we found out how to work on it, everything clicked.”

It’s amazing that all it takes for a tour pro to go off in any given round is having things “click”. It just goes to show the amount of talent and expertise that these guys possess. Even though Simpson didn’t play exceptionally well in the first two rounds, at least he didn’t play himself out of the tournament. He stayed close enough that his third round 65 got him into contention.

Harbour Town Golf Links is an incredibly tight course with small, undulating greens. In order to score well there you have to put yourself in the proper position. Otherwise you’re pretty much guaranteed a two-putt. Simpson will be playing with Hoffman in the final pairing tomorrow. I’m sure there will be some fireworks to come from that group.
