Oklahoma Sooners Quarterback Kendal Thompson Arrested Friday Morning

Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

Early Friday morning, SoonerScoop.com reported that Oklahoma Sooners quarterback, Kendal Thompson had been arrested.

Thompson won’t likely be suspended for the nature of his arrest, but this isn’t exactly what a player trying to compete for the starting quarterback position should be doing to get coaches to notice him.

A lot of reports had Thompson with the slighter edge over Trevor Knight, who are both in competition with the likely No. 1 guy, Blake Bell. Compared to what some of the other players are out there doing during the offseason, Thompson’s charges seem pretty tame.

For football fans of a certain age, you may remember Thompson’s father, Charles Thompson. During what you could call, the Wild West days of college football – or the eighties – Thompson was the starting quarterback for the Sooners. He was an All-Big 8 Conference First team and spent time speaking with at-risk youth.

Shortly after the 1988 season, Thompson was set up and busted by the FBI for selling cocaine to an undercover agent. He spent 17 months in prison. When he got out, he went back to college at Central State University in Ohio and led them to a NAIA Championship. He tried his hand in the NFL, but most teams deemed him a risk, so he never played.

He now does motivational speaking about his past mistakes, so I can imagine he is not too thrilled with the news of his son.

If anyone can give Kendal advice on what not to do, his father is a prime candidate. Public intoxication is nowhere on the same level as selling cocaine, though.

Right now, this is a case of a college kid doing college things. Let’s just hope it doesn’t progress.
