2013 NFL Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars Should Go Defensive With OLB Dion Jordan

Scott Olmos-USA TODAY Sports

For weeks now, the Jacksonville Jaguars have been a mystery at the front of the draft. Sitting with the second overall pick, the Jags can basically go in any direction they choose. We’ve heard all the scenarios at this point, from Geno Smith and Eric Fisher, to trading out of the second pick all together. The only piece to the puzzle, is that the Kansas City Chiefs will likely take OT Luke Joeckel with the first pick. That’s it, there are no other ‘strong indications’ coming from Jaguars camp.

However, one very popular name showing up on mock drafts everywhere, is OLB/DE Dion Jordan out of Oregon. The former tight end was converted over to defense in 2010, and hasn’t looked back since. He’s a prototypical modern day hybrid defender, with speed and strength to rush the passer, and drop into coverage. The only thing that’s held him back, has been the torn labrum he suffered at the end of his senior season.

So just on the basis that Jordan should develop into a Pro Bowl defender, the Jags should be interested. But add in the fact that Gus Bradley is now the head coach, and the pick makes even more sense. Bradley is a defensive guy, and what better way to start his tenure in Jacksonville, than by taking arguably the best defensive player available?

It’s too much of a reach to take Smith at No.2, and if Jacksonville can’t trade down, they might as well take the best player available to them. Jordan is likely that guy, and at the same time, a player Bradley could probably work wonders with.
