How will Limiting Stephen Strasburg’s Innings affect Fantasy Baseball Owners?
All around the fantasy world Stephen Strasburg owners felt a wave of panic come over their body when they found out about the Nats’ new game plan for their ace pitcher. The Washington Nationals have not been shy about saying that they are considering limiting him to around 160 innings, which would likely put him on the shelf for the majority of the fantasy baseball playoffs. This could potentially be season-ending for some fantasy squads that have Strasburg penciled in at the top of their rotation and would devastate the entire fantasy community.
The team is being overly cautious with Strasburg, because he had such an exhausting rehab following his Tommy John surgery at the end of 2010. However, like most pitchers, Strasburg has come back even stronger and is throwing harder then he ever has. His pitches are hitting all of the plate and his fastball his topping out at just over 95 MPH, which is among the best in the MLB. He has struck out a phenomenal 51 batters in his 44 innings already and may have become the new poster child for Doctor Andrews’ famous procedure. Despite Strasburg coming back like a 21-year old, the team is still going to be conservative with him, like most general managers across the game would be.
The Nationals are currently 21-12 and leading the National League East, over the Atlanta Braves, by a meager half a game. If the Nats keep winning, or in the very least stay competitive, then it will be absolutely impossible for the team to shutdown their best player right before the playoffs. This could end up being a saving grace for the Strasburg’s fantasy value down the stretch, so there could be a huge wave of band-wagon Washington National fans come June just to keep their fantasy hopes alive. It is not being biased; it is simply fantasy baseball.
