Source: Sixers to Hire Tony Dileo As New GM

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

It took the entire off season but it finally got done. The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a deal promoting assistant general manager Tony Dileo to the role of General Manager under President Rod Thorn, a league source revealed on Friday.

Under the team’s agreed upon succession plan, Thorn will take the role as a club adviser later in the off season but until then Dileo will serve beneath him for a short time period. Upon the aforementioned move, Managing Partner, Joshua Harris, also has intention to add to the front office of the Sixers in the future.

The Sixers stayed within their own camp to find their general manager of the future which may have been the smartest move for the team. After looking all across the league for multiple different candidates it seems as if the  Sixers made the right choice in picking the former vice president of operations.

The team looked to assistant general manager Tom Penn at one time from the Portland Trailblazers, as well as Jeff Bower, general manger from the New Orleans Hornets, Boston Celtics general manager Mike Zarren and the Denver Nuggets general manager, Masai Ujiri.

Looking at Dileo, he has been a part of the Sixers’ organization since the early the 1990-1991 NBA regular season, holding almost every position in the front office along the way. He was an interim head coach of the team in the 2008 season with the firing of Maurice Cheeks but mostly was involved with the team’s basketball operations. Dileo was one of the driving forces in the four-team blockbuster deal that brought Andrew Bynum to the team this summer.

The team will officially promote Dileo later today. As of now, one of the greatest front office hero’s in 76ers history will finally take his role as the cream of the crop, the top of the line, the general manager and soon to be president of an NBA front office. The honor is much deserved.
