2012 MLB Playoffs: Breaking Down Final Scenarios For Wednesday

Here’s a breakdown of the final scenarios for the 2012 MLB Playoffs:

Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds

Heading into Wednesday, the Nationals and Reds are tied with 97 wins as they battle for the No. 1 seed in the National League. While the Nationals take on the Philadelphia Phillies in their regular season finale, the Reds will have their hands full against the St. Louis Cardinals–who clinched the final Wild Card spot in the National League on Tuesday.

Even if both teams finish with the same record, the Nationals hold the tiebreaker over the Reds for the No. 1 seed–but it would just be easier for Washington to come through with the win.

Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics

Who would have thought the winner of the AL West would come down to the final game of the regular season? The fact that Oakland is in this position after trailing 13 games at one point of the regular season is nothing short of impressive and they may one of the hottest teams in the American League heading into the playoffs.

This matchup between the Rangers and Athletics is simple–whoever wins earns the division and whoever loses will earn a Wild Card spot.

New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles

Thanks to a late rally against the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees enter the final day of the regular season with a one-game lead over the Orioles in the AL East. The division belongs to New York as long as they win on Wednesday against Boston, but if not–they’ll play Baltimore on Thursday to determine who takes the crowd as division champions.
