Rant and Rise: R.A. Dickey Falls Short of 21st Win, Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees Win

Here’s the latest edition of Rant and Rise for October 3, 2012:

New York Mets Pitcher R.A. Dickey Falls Short of 21st Win

Despite another disappointing season for the Mets, it was an exciting year for Dickey as he entered Tuesday’s game against the Miami Marlins looking for his 21st win of the season. Unfortunately, Dickey fell short of his goal after giving up three runs in six innings and New York would end up losing the game 4-3 in 12 innings.

Still, this one loss doesn’t take away from the amazing season Dickey had as he established a reputation for himself as one of the top pitchers in baseball with a dangerous knuckleball.

Oakland Athletics Win Against Texas Rangers

In what may be the most exciting series to end the season, the Athletics pulled off another impressive win over the Rangers on Tuesday to move into first place in the AL West thanks to a strong performance by Travis Blackley. All of a sudden, Wednesday’s game between these two rivals determines who wins the division and who earns the Wild Card–which nobody could have imagined considering Oakland trailed by 13 games in the division at one point during the regular season.

New York Yankees Rally to Remain in First Place

Thanks to a two-run ninth inning and the game-winning single by Raul Ibanez in the 12th, the Yankees escaped Tuesday’s game with a 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox to stay one game ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in the AL East. The division belongs to New York as long as they win on Wednesday, but if not–there’s a chance they’ll have to play a tiebreaker on Thursday.
