Rant My Life: Philip Rivers Not Living Up to Expectations in 2012

Ever since Philip Rivers took over the starting job at quarterback back in 2006, the San Diego Chargers have always been the type of team to have high expectations at the beginning of the regular season–mainly because they always seem to have one of the most talented teams overall. After throwing a career high 20 interceptions last season, the Chargers were hoping Rivers would bounce back in 2012, but that’s been anything but the case so far.

Despite coming off an impressive performance against the Kansas City Chiefs in which he completed 18 of 20 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns, the argument can be made that Rivers has failed to live up to his true potential so far this season as the Chargers sit at 4-4 heading into Week 10. Not only has Rivers failed to throw a touchdown pass in two of the first eight games, but he’s only broken the 300-yard passing mark once this season.

For a player that threw for at least 4,600 yards in each of the last two seasons–this is completely unacceptable.

The argument can be made that Rivers doesn’t have the same type of receiving core, but there are enough weapons on the Chargers’ offense that allow him the opportunity to record bigger numbers each week. There’s no question Rivers is one of the most competitive quarterbacks in the league and he always has the potential to be one of the top quarterbacks, but the consistency seems to have disappeared this season–which could hurt San Diego down the road if they’re fighting for a playoff spot.
