NFL Must Do Something About Minority Hiring

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

There is a problem that doesn’t appear to be getting better in the National Football League. That is the fact that no minorities were hired this season for any of the head coaching openings in the league. It doesn’t seem like NFL teams have learned that coaches of color can coach just as well as a white head coach. The NFL has to do something about that but the question is what?

You can’t force teams to make a minority hire just because of that. It boils down to owners who have the mindset to make a decision that may be considered out of the box these days. We have seen coaches like Mike Tomlin, Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith be successful in the NFL so why can’t other minority coaches be just as good? It is a confusing thing for NFL teams to figure out obviously. The NFL is going to put in some other rule along the way that forces something to happen.

This is definitely a crossroads for teams in the NFL with head coach hiring. There will be a change at some point in coaching hires but when the day comes is anyone’s guess right now. I would love to see some new coaches get a chance instead of just recycling the fired coaches. It is truly an old boys’ club right now in the NFL as coaches just move from team to team and no one else gets a chance. The time has come to have that change and get more minorities into high-profile NFL positions.
