By now, just about every person in this country has heard about the controversy surrounding Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Manti Te’o and the story of his girlfriend being a hoax. Te’o has every reason in the world to be frustrated and embarrassed over the situation considering the entire country was led to believe he was inspired this past season by the story of his girlfriend Lennay Kekua dying, but now it appears the linebacker may be the victim of the internet’s next most popular trend–Te’oing.
In the same way “Tebowing” from Tim Tebow and “Griffining” from Robert Griffin III took the internet by storm over the last two years, a new site has been created dedicated to sports fans uploading photos of them next to their “fake girlfriend.” With all of the stories surrounding Te’o and the events surrounding his “girlfriend” over the last couple of years, nobody really knows what to think over this bizarre situation other than the fact that someone thought it would be a hilarious idea to create a fan site dedicated to photos of individuals and their girlfriends who simply don’t exist.
While it’s difficult not to feel sorry for Te’o over this difficult situation considering how big this story has become in the national media, it’s hard not to laugh a little bit over this site with all of the different poses by fans. This is only the beginning of Te’oing–so just imagine how many fans pick up on the craze by this time tomorrow when word begins to spread around.
