Rant and Rise: San Francisco Giants Top Cincinnati Reds, Oakland Athletics Force Game 4, Jonathan Vilma’s Ban Upheld

Here’s the latest edition of Rant and Rise for October 10, 2012:

San Francisco Giants Top Cincinnati Reds in Extras

The Reds were in the perfect position to sweep the Giants after winning the first two games in San Francisco, but their bats failed to come through on Tuesday as they fell 2-1 in 10 innings. Despite a solid performance by Homer Bailey in which he pitched seven innings while allowing one run and striking out 10 batters, a key error in the top of the 10th inning by Scott Rolen led to Buster Posey scoring the game-winning run to force a Game 4 on Wednesday.

Oakland Athletics Shutout Detroit Tigers

If any team is capable of overcoming a 2-0 deficit in the playoffs, it’s the Athletics considering they overcame a 13-game deficit at the end of June to win the AL West title. Thanks to a solid six-inning performance by Brett Anderson, Oakland will survive for at least one more day after a crucial 2-0 win over Detroit.

The A’s are the feel-good story of the 2012 postseason and it should be interesting to see if they can take that story to a Game 5 if they can pull out another big win on Wednesday.

Jonathan Vilma‘s Ban Upheld

Bad news for New Orleans Saints fans as NFL Commissioner announced on Tuesday that Vilma’s year-long suspension was back in place for the remainder of the season. Even though Goodell reduced two of the suspensions for the players involved in the bounty scandal, the four players have 72 hours to appeal the process.

Once again, Vilma is clearly upset over the decision made by Goodell and it should be interesting to see what happens next in this never-ending case.
