The San Diego Chargers found their general manager in former Indianapolis Colts Director of Player Personnel Tom Telesco and found a head coach in former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.

It is time for San Diego’s front office to focus on free agents.  San Diego ranked 22nd in the NFL in receiving yards and averaged 10.7 yards per reception, which ranked 30th in the league.

San Diego’s front office should think about going after Dwayne Bowe.  He had at least 1,000 receiving yards in three of his six seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.  Bowe led the NFL with 15 touchdown receptions in 2010 and ranked seventh with 1,162 receiving yards. He ranked 10th in receptions and 13th in receiving yards during the 2011 season.

Bowe’s production has declined in terms of receiving yards and TD receptions, but this was due in part to poor quarterback play.  Kansas City’s quarterbacks combined to throw 21 touchdowns and 38 interceptions in 2011 and 2012 while the team ranked 28th in QB rating in 2011 and 31st in 2012.

There are better wide receivers in free agency, like Wes Welker and Greg Jennings when he is healthy, but one would have to believe that the 7-9 Chargers are not on their radar.

Bowe would be leaving a Kansas City team that had a 10-6 record in 2010, a 7-9 record in 2011 and a 2-14 record in 2012. Welker and Jennings are on teams that went to the playoffs the last four seasons.

The front office has to improve their receiving core especially considering the fact that Robert Meachem was signed last year in free agency and he had career lows in yards per game and receiving touchdowns.

San Diego’s front office should still go after Welker first, but Bowe should be considered as an option in free agency.
